    About me

A short biography to help you learn a bit more about me:

I am first and foremost a family man with a wonderful, young autistic teenager, and a zoo of rescue animals. Music is not only my career and hobby but also rewards me with a little sanity!

My life experience in music is extensive but my most memorable times include being a part of a team. At 9 years old (1980) as a part of the Salvation Army’s Centenary celebrations, I performed at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall. This marked the beginning of a long and ongoing performance career. During the following years, alongside Salvation Army commitments, I also worked with numerous brass bands in the north west of England playing solo euphonium, both home and abroad.

I began studying classical piano in 1982 under 2 concert pianists – Stephen Hopwood and Sally-Ann Bottomley (now McLeod). Sally-Ann is a current lecturer with the Royal Northern College of Music. My music however, has not been restricted to classical and brass as I have been a member of several rock and pop groups playing keyboards or bass guitar.

I have also been Musical Director for a number of amateur and semi-professional dramatics societies, where I enjoyed bringing together orchestras and actors, stage hands and sound and lighting techs for productions such as The King and I, Hello Dolly and My Fair Lady.

    Teaching
Having recently relocated from Greater Manchester where I successfully taught many students of all ages and backgrounds for over twenty years, I am starting a new business in the East Yorkshire Coast area.

I have an excellent success rate with all my previous students, with various instruments to all levels up to the advanced Grade 8. My teaching techniques vary according to each individual but I also employ the valuable and structured approaches of the ABRSM and London College of Music. I have found that teaching mobile provides much improved learning as it affords the student the luxury of working with their own instrument in familiar surroundings, thus reducing the nervous anxiety caused by having to perform in front of a teacher and therefore, maximising their time in learning.

Having discussed how lessons are often geared towards exams and marked progression, they do not have to be the ultimate goal exams are not for everyone and thus simply knowing that I have helped someone else to find the magic in making music at any level fills me with a sense of satisfaction and pride.

    The Lessons
I am happy to teach students of any age from 5 to 95 as you are never too ‘young’ to learn! I offer a first lesson free as a trial for the student and then lessons are 30 minutes for £14.

    The Future
Whilst teaching is my main vocation I also enjoy furthering my own skills as a musician and composer at home where I have a fully equipped sound and recording studio. Currently I am working towards the higher diplomas in classical piano and music theory, with an ambition to lecturing at nearby universities in the future.
Thanks for taking the time to read a little about me. Good luck with your musical aspirations in the future.
    Rob.
